What is included in the first appointment?
Initial appointments are allocated more time to allow a full medical history to be taken and for consent forms to be signed. In addition to this, a full assessment of the condition of your feet is made including a neurovascular assessment where by the blood flow to your feet is monitored and sensations checked. All of the above is absolutely mandatory before any treatment can be carried out. It is therefore essential that you book in as a new patient assessment on your first appointment.
What is the difference between a podiatrist and a chiropodist?
In the UK, the terms "podiatrist" and "chiropodist" have historically been used interchangeably to refer to professionals who specialize in the treatment of foot disorders. However, there have been some changes in terminology and training standards over time. Traditionally, a chiropodist in the UK focused on non-surgical treatments for foot problems, such as nail care, corn and callus removal, and general foot care. Chiropodists typically held diplomas or certificates in chiropody from recognized institutions. On the other hand, a podiatrist, while also focusing on non-surgical treatments, typically had a broader scope of practice and might have received more extensive training, including in biomechanics, orthotics, and surgical interventions. Podiatrists might have held degrees such as Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Masters of Science (MSc) in Podiatry. However, in recent years, there has been a move towards standardizing the profession under the term "podiatrist" to reflect the broader scope of practice and align with international standards. As a result, the term "chiropodist" is becoming less common, and professionals in the field are increasingly referred to as podiatrists, regardless of whether they primarily focus on non-surgical or surgical treatments. In essence, while there used to be more distinction between podiatrists and chiropodists in the UK, the primary difference now lies more in historical terminology rather than in the scope of practice or training. Both podiatrists and chiropodists, as they are traditionally understood, are qualified to diagnose and treat a wide range of foot and ankle conditions.
